Here at WAM Engineering we are blessed to have many of the very best cartridges pass through our
laboratory for our cartridge analysis service. When we care to, we can listen to these cartridges in our main
system while controlling for mechanical variables that inevitably exist from unit to unit.
Before listening to this Kuzma CAR70 cartridge, we already knew it was the most mechanically ideal MC
cartridge on the market due to its design priority of putting system rigidity at the top of its rank order. As a
result, we were prepared to be impressed.
What I was not prepared for is the unstoppable impulse to listen to all of my records again. I have never heard
a cartridge deliver a lower mechanical noise floor. Absolutely amazing.
Is the price an obscenity? To many, it will be. Unfortunately, the cartridge is such a sensitive instrument that the
extra cost necessary to build a better mechanical transcriptor requires specialized materials and highly
specialized machining and ablating. As more cartridge manufacturers begin to understand the sensitivity of
their own product better they will make better design decisions that put rigidity at a higher position in their rank
order of design priorities. As they do, the market will find ways to deliver rigidity for cheaper and more of us can
begin to experience more of what is actually in the groove, waiting to be extracted.
A design like this points the way forward, in our opinion. We can’t wait for the market to respond, making such
engineering more affordable.
